Detail of Grain

This was quite a find. A furniture maker and restorer had taken this table base in for repair many, many years ago, and it was never picked up. It had no top, and the base was stripped and colorless (and covered with an inch of dirt). But, the carving was quite delicate, and well worth preserving. With the addition of a top, and some color and finish, it is now a beautiful small table in a living room, ready for a beverage to facilitate the next instance of serious social discourse.
The top was made from a block of walnut burl, resawn by Turner, and four way matched. From different angles, depending upon the light, the top dances with movement. It invites the touch, which is welcomed. The finish on the carved base is stain, shellac, and wax. The top is boiled linseed oil, shellac, varnish and wax.
This was an easy piece to bring back to a useful life, and the price was fixed accordingly. More of this burl block remains for use.
